When Safety Technology Earns Driver Trust

Driver-monitoring systems have the potential to reduce preventable collisions by recognizing signs of distraction or fatigue and prompting drivers to return their attention to the road. But even the most sophisticated safety feature can only make a difference when drivers understand it, trust it and keep it activated.
Recent research into Subaru’s DriverFocus system offers an encouraging example of what happens when safety technology is designed around real driver behaviour.
Distracted driving remains a serious concern
Distracted driving includes any activity that diverts attention from operating a vehicle. Although mobile phone use is one of the most visible causes, distractions can also include adjusting navigation, interacting with vehicle controls, eating or speaking with passengers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, crashes involving distracted drivers claimed 3,208 lives and injured more than 315,000 people in the United States in 2024. NHTSA
Drowsiness creates another layer of risk. A fatigued driver may experience slower reaction times, reduced awareness and difficulty maintaining focus—even if they have not completely fallen asleep.
Driver-attention technology is designed to identify some of these warning signs before they contribute to a collision.
How driver-monitoring technology works
Camera-based driver-monitoring systems observe indicators such as eye position, head movement and facial behaviour. When the system detects that a driver may be distracted or drowsy, it can provide a visual or audible alert.
Unlike outward-facing cameras that monitor lanes, vehicles and road conditions, driver-facing systems focus on the person behind the wheel.
This distinction is important. Advanced driver-assistance systems can support the driving task, but they do not eliminate the driver’s responsibility to remain engaged. Driver monitoring provides an additional layer of safety by helping determine whether the person operating the vehicle is paying attention.
Some systems work primarily while partial automation features are active. Others can monitor attention during conventional driving as well, potentially expanding their usefulness to a much larger share of everyday trips.
High adoption provides an encouraging signal
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety surveyed 3,475 American owners of vehicles equipped with Subaru’s DriverFocus system.
The results showed unusually strong acceptance:
87% reported driving with the system activated most or all of the time
70% said they would want the technology in their next vehicle
64% of drivers who used it believed it made them safer
63% said it helped them avoid distractions
Only 4% reported turning it off through their driver profile

That matters because many vehicle safety features struggle with consistent use. If drivers find alerts confusing, overly frequent or irritating, they may disable the feature—removing its ability to help when it is needed most.
Good safety design includes the driver experience
Accuracy is essential, but it is not the only factor determining whether safety technology succeeds.
The timing, frequency and presentation of alerts can shape how drivers respond to a system. An alert that is clear and appropriately timed may encourage someone to refocus. One that feels excessive or unexplained may create frustration.
In the IIHS survey, receiving too many alerts and general annoyance were the leading reasons given by the small percentage of drivers who disabled the feature.
This reveals a central challenge for automotive technology developers: safety systems must be sensitive enough to identify risk without becoming so intrusive that drivers reject them.
Designing for acceptance may involve:
Reducing unnecessary or repetitive alerts
Selecting visual, audible or haptic feedback appropriate to the situation
Clearly explaining what behaviour the system detects
Helping drivers understand why a particular alert occurred
Making settings understandable without weakening essential safeguards
Using real-world feedback to improve system performance over time
The best safety experience is not necessarily the one that produces the most warnings. It is the one that delivers the right intervention at the right moment—and earns enough confidence to remain in use.
Education supports adoption
Drivers may interpret an alert as a false warning when they do not understand what the system is designed to recognize.
Clear education at the dealership, inside the vehicle interface and through the owner’s digital experience can help close that gap. Drivers should know what the monitoring system observes, what can trigger an alert and where its limitations lie.
This information must be communicated without giving drivers the impression that the technology can take responsibility for them. Driver-monitoring systems are support tools, not substitutes for attention or safe decision-making.
When drivers understand that relationship, alerts can feel less like interruptions and more like useful interventions.
Connected data can improve safety systems
Driver-monitoring technology also highlights the growing importance of connected automotive data.
Information from cameras, vehicle systems, software and driver interactions must be processed accurately and translated into a response the driver can understand. Over time, aggregated and responsibly managed data can help manufacturers evaluate system performance, identify patterns and improve how alerts are delivered.
That creates responsibilities across the automotive ecosystem. Data must be handled securely, systems must communicate reliably and technology partners must maintain clear standards for privacy, integration and accuracy.
For collision repairers, these systems introduce additional considerations. A repair involving the dashboard, windshield, steering column, cameras or other nearby components may affect the operation of advanced safety technology. Proper repair procedures, diagnostics and calibrations become increasingly important as monitoring systems become more common.
Restoring a vehicle now means more than repairing its visible structure. It can also mean ensuring that the connected systems supporting the driver continue to work as
intended.
Technology is most effective when people use it
The growing acceptance of driver-monitoring technology is a positive sign for the automotive industry. It shows that drivers can embrace proactive safety features when those systems feel useful, understandable and appropriately designed.
The larger lesson extends beyond one manufacturer or feature. Innovation alone does not create safer roads. Technology must function reliably, communicate clearly and fit naturally into the driving experience.
When intelligent systems are supported by thoughtful design, secure data and proper repair practices, they can do more than introduce another alert. They can help drivers remain engaged, and help prevent a moment of distraction from becoming something more serious.
